Jean Paul Gaultier designs new cone bra corset for Madonna

Among the numerous costumes that Madonna will be wearing throughout her MDNA World Tour is a masculine-inspired look by Jean Paul Gaultier featuring a corset-style top.

For the pop star's ninth world tour, the French designer drew upon a now-iconic costume he'd designed for her in the past.

'We played with the ideas of a suit and a corset. But the corset is now like a cage,' Jean Paul Gaultier outlined. 'What I have done this time is a nod to the conical bra corset of the Blond Ambition tour but reinterpreted in 3D, in patent leather on the outside with metallic leather on the inside. It's all about masculine and feminine, Madonna and Jean Paul Gaultier classics reinterpreted for 2012.

Madonna will also be wearing costumes by Dolce & Gabbana, Jeremy Scott and Alexander Wang.

The MDNA world tour kicks off Thursday in Tel Aviv.

'Martian Pink' diamond fetches $17m in Hong Kong

The 'Martian Pink' diamond fetched $17.4 million at auction in Hong Kong this week when it went on sale for the first time in 36 years, more than double the estimated price.

Billed as the 'largest round fancy intense pink diamond' ever to come up for auction, the stunning gem was the highlight of a Christies' jewellery auction that raised $80 million on Tuesday, the auction house said.

'Having appeared on the market for the first time in 36 years, The Martian Pink sold by Harry Winston in 1976 created a sensation during its worldwide exhibition tour and achieved a staggering US$17.4m after a 10-minute bidding war,' said Vickie Sek of Christie's Asia.

The diamond was bought by an anonymous buyer, the auction house said.

'The US$80m auction was highlighted with top prices across the board, culminating in a world record price of US$551,000 per carat for a perfect Burmese ruby of 6.04 carats,' Sek said.

Hong Kong has emerged as the world's third biggest auction centre after New York and London, thanks largely to the growing luxury market in mainland China.

French luxury brands fight back against fakes

French luxury brands from Chanel to Vuitton on Wednesday launch a campaign with several European countries to fight back against the increasingly lucrative and damaging flood of counterfeit goods.

The global market for luxury fakes has exploded, fed by Asia where 85 percent of articles seized in Europe are produced and the increasing popularity of on-line shops that give the buyer a sense of anonymity and impunity.

To fight the scourge, the Comite Colbert grouping 75 French luxury goods makers including Dior, Cartier and Remy Martin, is launching a poster campaign in French airports ahead of the summer to dissuade travellers from buying fakes.

'You can call your lawyer with this telephone,' reads one of the posters, above a picture of a counterfeit Chanel mobile.

France has the toughest anti-counterfeit legislation in the world, explains Comite Colbert boss Elisabeth Ponsolle des Portes, with simply possessing a counterfeit good here considered a crime since 1994.

'In France you can be fined up to 300,000 euros and jailed for three years' if you own counterfeit goods, the posters say.

The Comite Colbert has staged campaigns every two years since 1995, but this time Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Croatia are getting involved, with their customs officers able to use the posters for free.

Ponsolle des Portes hopes that more countries will get on board.

'This is important for Europe, in terms of jobs,' she said.

Counterfeit seizures doubled in Europe between 2009 and 2010, reaching 103 million items worth 1.1 billion euros ($1.37 billion), with customs officers themselves often unable to tell the fake from the real.

And according to 2009 Eurobarometer statistics, 22 percent of EU citizens have unknowingly bought counterfeit goods.

As home to many of the world's best known luxury brands, France is particularly exposed. Fake goods cost the economy 30,000 jobs and six billion euros in lost revenues every year, according to the Comite Colbert.

Clothes, sunglasses, perfume, cosmetics, leather goods, half the 8.9 million counterfeit articles seized in France in 2011 were luxury goods, with Louis Vuitton products the most copied.

Globally the underground fake goods economy is booming thanks to Internet shopping, as testified to by the increasing number of items seized in postal sorting offices.

Which is why the Comite Colbert now wants to get the cooperation of banking groups and payment handlers, such as Mastercard, Visa, American Express and PayPal, to track the illegal trade online.

Missoni designs sandals for Havaianas

Italian brand Missoni, which specializes in original printed knitwear, is collaborating with Brazilian brand Havaianas for a high-end capsule collection of thong sandals.

Sporting iconic Missoni motifs, the thong sandals are composed of leftover pieces of the Brazilian brand's multicolored rubber flip flops, which are then put together to create various forms of zigzag patchwork.

One of the new models for 2012, the 'Missoni Loves Havaianas Slim,' is adorned with several jewel-style lucky charms and will be available in select retail outlets in mid-June for a price of 90 euros.

The strap, available in purple or black, is decorated with charms in the form of four-leaf clovers and ladybugs.

Last year, Missoni collaborated with another mass-market brand, US retailer Target, creating a 400-piece range with its signature zigzag patterns. The collaboration line, with many items priced at under $50, was so popular that it sold out almost immediately from retailers across the US.

C&A links its hangers to Facebook

Store chain C&A has created a surprising innovation in retail: an electronic hanger, linked to Facebook, that displays the number of 'likes' on each item.

How can a brand shift from online commerce to in-store buying and vice versa? C&A may have found the solution, now being tested in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Each item available in the boutique is posted on Facebook and subject to the opinions of visitors to the site. The popularity of the item displays instaneously in-store, on a screen embedded in the hanger. Customers can thus rely on the number of votes when making their choice -- which the store, of course, hopes will increase sales.

Still, Internet users still need to have the same tastes as buyers to some extent, as it remains the buyers who determine what items make it to stores in the first place.

A perfect solution if you want to be sure your looks are on-trend...or if you want to avoid winding up in the same T-shirt as 500,000 Facebook fans.

Beth Ditto wants IKEA-inspired plus size clothing line

Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto has spoken out about her plans for a signature plus size fashion line comprising simple basics, which she says would be 'the IKEA of clothes for fat girls and boys.'

The rocker collaborated with British plus-size retailer Evans in 2009 and 2010 on a clothing line which blended 1980s punk styles with retro 1940s-influenced pieces.

But the singer says any future projects would be much less stylized.

'It wouldn't be crazy designs -- it would be simple. I want to make the IKEA of clothes for fat girls and boys. Cheap, affordable, basic -- but ethically made. Basics, you know?' Ditto told vulture.com in an interview May 24.

The musician is also interested in nurturing her passion for vintage attire via an online store and is looking for the right partner for such a project.

'I want to do a 'buy the outfit' function, and I want to show how outfits look on all kinds of different body types, even boys and butches,' she added.

'It's high concept, and I don't have time. I'd need to find someone to work with me on it, but I'm also very controlling about this, just like I am with Gossip stuff.'

Ditto also commented on the controversy following Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld's comments earlier this year that songstress Adele has 'a divine voice and a beautiful face,' but is 'a little too fat.'

'First of all, Karl Lagerfeld is not even sane. Second of all, he's not the end-all, be-all of what he does. He's really talented, but that doesn't mean he's right,' said the singer.

'Third, Karl Lagerfeld used to be this really fat, eccentric dude. He always had that fat kid fan with him, too. To me, only a person who was fat could get away with saying something like that.'

'America's Next Top Model': Blogging sensation Bryanboy 'signs contract'

The ever increasing status of the fashion blogger is showing no sign of slowing down, with internet sensation Bryanboy reportedly having signed a contract to join the cast of the soon-to-be-filmed upcoming season of America's Next Top Model.

There was shock among fashionistas earlier this year when it was revealed long-running judges and mentors J. Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker wouldn't be returning for the 19th season of the televised modeling competition hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks.

The reality show, which has become a huge international hit since its launch in 2003, has already announced the arrival of new cast members, model Rob Evans and celebrity stylist Johnny Wujek, as a permanent third judge and creative consultant respectively.

While fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone will also rejoin as a judge for a second season, sources told WWD May 25 that Bryanboy, real name Bryan Grey Yambao, has signed a contract, with his involvement set to increase the show's online appeal.

With filming due to commence in Los Angeles imminently, Bryanboy has hinted at his involvement via recent Tweets about a new apartment in the city. The blogger has over 250,000 followers on the social networking site and also counts Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs among his fans. Bryanboy made his name back in 2007 when a video he created about the latter's rise to fame became a viral hit. Watch it here: http://youtu.be/UT7GlJt2rS8.

The video caused such a sensation that Jacobs even named a bag after him, and the blogger is now cited among the likes of Scott Schuman of the The Sartorialist and Style Rookie's Tavi as some of the fashion industry's most important players.

Louise Gray 'pushing optimism' with Topshop make-up and fashion collab

Following the huge success of the third Mary Katrantzou for Topshop capsule collection earlier this year, the high street store has announced it will team up with London Fashion Week star Louise Gray for a beauty and fashion line.

Gray, who along with the likes of David Koma and Holly Fulton is considered one of the most exciting rising British designers, impressed with her colorful London Fashion Week show back in February, where models sported mohawks and fluorescent cosmetics.

The collaboration will launch in late August, comprising playful and bright make-up including glitter pots and flouro eye colors in creamy textures. The clothing collection will evoke her trademark simple shapes and experiments with color and texture.

'My idea behind the collaboration was to design for the Topshop girl a range that was young and fun, similar to both the fashion and make-up I wear already,' explains Gray.

'My mainline collections have always been about pushing optimism, color and fun, I want her to experiment with the product, be daring and have fun with it.'

The designer will no doubt hope to repeat the hype surrounding February's Katrantzou capsule collection launch, which in the tradition of high street/designer collaborations sold out online within hours.

Topshop going green with eco capsule line

Following hot on the heels of H&M's sustainable Glamour Conscious Collection, high street retailer Topshop has teamed up with eco fashion brand Reclaim To Wear to create a debut upcycled capsule collection made entirely from discarded materials.

Materials including surplus stock and production off-cuts have gone into the line, which comprises on-trend pieces including ombre bleached denim shorts and color block panel mini and maxi dresses.

On sale from June 8 at the retailer's London Oxford Circus store and online, the line aims to encourage sustainability within the fashion industry.

Aiming to solve the problem of textile waste, Reclaim To Wear was founded in 1997. The brand's creative director Orsola de Castro and managing director Filippo Ricci shared their knowledge with Topshop when collaborating on the line.

'This is the first step towards the creation of zero waste design collections. I trust that the Topshop team's commitment to new sustainable solutions will lead to the reconsidering of consumption versus disposal throughout the whole fashion industry supply chain,' said de Castro.

The new eco friendly Topshop line follows a general shift in the fashion industry towards upcycling and sustainable fashion. On the high street H&M launched its Glamour Conscious Collection back in March, comprising pieces made using sustainable materials including organic cotton, hemp and recycled polyester.

Big name designers have also been getting in on the act, with a host of labels including Valentino and Lanvin signing up to film producer Livia Firth's Green Carpet Challenge initiative ahead of the awards ceremony season earlier this year.

Highlights on the Oscars red carpet included best actress winner Meryl Streep's gold draped Lanvin dress made out of eco-certified sourced fabric and Firth's red Valentino gown made of recycled polyester sourced from plastic bottles.

Court: Gore-Tex heiress can't adopt ex-husband

WILMINGTON, Del (Reuters) - F. Scott Fitzgerald observed that the rich are different, but that does not mean an heiress can adopt her 65-year-old ex-husband to increase her family's claim to a billion dollar inheritance.

Delaware's Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the unconventional adoption did not entitle the man to inherit a share of the Gore-Tex waterproof fabric fortune.

Heirs to the founders of W.L. Gore & Associates Inc of Newark, Delaware, have fought for years over how to divide their stake in the privately held company, which has $3 billion in annual revenue.

Their battle landed in court over the question of how the late Wilbert L. Gore, who founded the company in his basement in 1958, and his late wife, Vieve, intended to divide their fortune.

At the center of the dispute was the adoption nearly a decade ago by Susan Gore, one of Wilbert's five children, of her ex-husband, Jan Otto.

According to the court's opinion, Susan Gore and her son Nathan Otto began considering the adoption to even out the potential distribution from a family trust, which was meant to divide 26,500 Gore shares.

But because Susan Gore and Jan Otto had three children, while each of her four siblings had four, Susan's children stood to inherit fewer shares, according to the opinion. Eventually, the court said in its decision, she decided to adopt her ex-husband, who initially assured her he wanted to be her son merely to benefit their children.

Susan Gore went to a Wyoming court and secretly adopted Jan Otto in 2003, when he was 65. A year later, Jan Otto had a change of heart and decided to keep the potential distribution from the trust for himself, according to the court ruling.

While Susan was considering whether to 'un-adopt' her ex-husband in 2005, according to the opinion, her mother Vieve Gore died, releasing the trust assets and setting in motion the legal wrangling that led to the court's ruling.

'The fact that Susan kept this adoption secret until Vieve died further evidences that Susan and the Otto grandchildren knew that they were acting to thwart Vieve's intentions,' Chief Justice Myron Steele wrote in the 37-page opinion.

Attorneys for Susan Gore, Jan Otto, Nathan Otto and Susan Gore's siblings did not immediately return calls seeking comment. W.L. Gore & Associates spokeswoman Susan Crow did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment.

Hedi Slimane keeping first YSL resort line for buyers' eyes only

In stark contrast to designers such as Oscar de la Renta, who live-pinned his resort 2013 collection on Pinterest earlier this week, newly appointed Yves Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane will present his upcoming women's resort line to selected buyers only.

Since it was announced back in March that Slimane, who was ready-to-wear director of menswear at Yves Saint Laurent in the 90s, would be returning to the label by replacing Stefano Pilati as creative director, fashionistas have been eager to catch a glimpse of his new creations for the house.

But it has been reported that Slimane is taking an exclusive approach to his presentations, with a spokesperson telling WWD this week Slimane's 'transitional' women's cruise and spring menswear collections will only go on show to buyers.

This secrecy is in a similar vein to one of Slimane's Yves Saint Laurent predecessors Tom Ford, who famously keeps his signature collections closely guarded -- fashion fans were finally given the chance to see his Fall 2012 collection only when a leaked video surfaced on the internet back in March.

Slimane won't be keeping all his designs too closely guarded though, as the creator is set to make his first major impression as Yves Saint Laurent creative director with a catwalk show during Paris Fashion Week in September.

Cannes: Anja Rubik relaunching Playboy-inspired fashion mag

With the Cannes party season well underway, supermodel Anja Rubik is relaunching erotic fashion publication 25 Magazine in Cannes May 23 with a star-studded party at Pierre Cardin's mansion.

Rubik has been involved with the magazine since 2009, and having taken full editorial control she has rebranded the glossy publication in the style of '70s erotic magazine Viva.

Rubik also cites 1970s Playboy and former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld as a source of inspiration.

The new issue, which has been shot entirely be female photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Ellen von Unwerth, will feature some 300 pages of glossy photographs with no advertising.

'It's mainly a fashion magazine, but with an erotic twist. I think it's balanced quite well. There's a lot of fashion. The stylists had a lot of liberty to play around with clothes, and there was no list of credits they had to follow or anything like that,' the model told style.com.

The magazine will feature appearances from major models including Abbey Lee Kershaw, who can be seen in the following teaser: http://vimeo.com/41796693.

Rubik has already been seen at some of the biggest soirées during the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, including jewelry house Chopard's mystery masked ball May 21.

Digital Fashion Week: first livestream-only event set for October

While almost every major label now streams fashion shows live, the phenomenon looks set to enter a new phase this October when the world's first digital-only fashion week takes place.

Organized by Singapore-based events agency STORM, Digital Fashion Week (DFW) will be streamed solely online, with consumers able to shop their favorite looks off the runway in real time and have them delivered far before they hit stores.

This October will see DFW's debut edition, Digital Fashion Week Singapore, exclusively available for viewing at www.digitalfashionweek.com. Following the official launch of the twice-yearly event in Southeast Asia, DFW will proceed to other major cities around the world.

A host of Singapore's homegrown designers as well as international creators will feature in the inaugural edition, where they will present their Spring/Summer 2013 collections -- with the official show schedule to be announced in August 2012.

In addition to runway streaming, there will be catwalk commentaries by key fashion figures, pre-show performances by international artists and an app to provide users with instant fashion show live streaming, films, runway photos, designer information and e-commerce shopping.

'Until now, no digital platform as powerful as DFW has existed  for designers to reach out to people worldwide. We aim to harness technology and creativity to promote homegrown designers in each city to the global audiences by capitalising on the hype generated from the fashion shows,' said the event's co-founder Keyis Ng.

The announcement follows the increasing prevalence of online only runway shows, with labels including See by Chloé and ICB (International Concept Brand) favoring fashion production agency KCD's digital platform digitalfashionshows.com for virtual catwalk presentations earlier this year.

Also, back in 2011, Condé Nast owned fashion site Vogue.com ran a week-long online fashion event on its blog, featuring exclusive deals such as one-off collection launches and exclusive content including videos of retailers styling their collections.

Cannes Film Festival: Karl Lagerfeld joining Weinstein for movie prize

Karl Lagerfeld is teaming up with movie mogul Harvey Weinstein for what is set to be a highly covetable auction item at the upcoming Cinema Against AIDS gala during the Cannes Film Festival.

The annual amFAR black tie event is always a highlight of the festival, with some of the biggest names in fashion turning up for its fundraising auction.

The Chanel creative director is one of this year's chairs, and according to the New York Post, one lucky bidder at the May 24 event will be able to win the chance to appear in a short film directed by Lagerfeld and produced by Weinstein -- whose past producing credits include Shakespeare in Love, Gangs of New York, and Nine.

Meanwhile, Lagerfeld's past directing credits range from a series of commercials for European ice cream brand Magnum to fashion films for Chanel starring the likes of Freja Beha and Baptiste Giabiconi.

Other chairs for this year's Cinema Against AIDS gala, which will take place at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden Roc, include Milla Jovovich, Kylie Minogue, and former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld.

The latter is curating a fashion show based on the concept of the perfect black wardrobe. Some 20 designers are contributing to the show, ranging from classic French labels Christian Dior and Chanel to rising talents such as Scotland's Christopher Kane, and the entire collection will be auctioned off as a single lot during the gala.

Cannes Film Festival: Roman Polanski unveils Prada short film

Prada unveiled a special short film directed by Roman Polanski and starring British actors Helena Bonham Carter and Ben Kingsley at the Cannes Film Festival May 21.

The film, which can be seen at http://youtu.be/-gl-kaGumng, sees a Prada-clad Bonham Carter's character visiting a psychiatrist (played by Kingsley) to discuss a bad dream.

The doctor isn't listening though, as he becomes captivated by her purple fur coat, which he eventually tries on before the tagline 'Prada Suits Everyone' fills the screen.

The ad was screened before veteran moviemaker Polanski presented a restored version of his 1979 picture Tess, which tells the story of a peasant girl that becomes the affection of two men.

Other classic pictures to have been presented during the ongoing festival include a restored and extended version of Sergio Leone's 1984 classic Once Upon a Time in America.

That restoration project was funded by Gucci thanks to its partnership with Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, and was followed by a party in honor of the movie's star Robert De Niro at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d'Antibes Saturday night.

Polanski takes surprise ad for Prada to Cannes

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski on Monday unveiled his new ad for the Italian luxury design house Prada in a surprise screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Polanski attended the showing of the short film titled 'A Therapy', which has British actors Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham Carter play a therapist and his posh Prada-clad patient.

'It's a sort of anti-ad,' he said afterwards, joking that he wanted to show the world that he was as good at making short films as he was at long ones.

The Kingsley character quickly loses interest in Bonham Carter and turns his attention to the fur coat she has hung on a rack, which he ends up stroking his face with as a final caption reads 'Prada Suits Everyone'.

The ad was screened before Polanski presented a restored version of 'Tess', a 1979 movie starring Nastassia Kinski, who was also with him at the festival.

The Cannes festival earlier screened a documentary on the director which features him chatting about everything from his childhood in Nazi-occupied Poland to the sexual assault case that caused him to flee the United States in 1978.

Polanski was in 2009 arrested in Switzerland to be extradited to the United States but Swiss authorities rejected the demand.

Cheryl Cole's dress: Twitter highlights from Cannes

Singer, TV presenter and fashion icon Cheryl Cole appeared at the Cannes Film Festival courtesy of beauty brand L'Oreal, who flew her out to the South of France for a red carpet appearance at the premiere of Michael Haneke's Amour.

Vogue magazine's UK branch was taken with Cheryl's outfit, asking whether the white Stephane Rolland creation with red ostrich feather train could be Cannes's most dramatic dress.

'Love the red of her dress merging with the red carpet!' said fashion designer Masaba Gupta, and Perfect Wedding magazine wondered whether the look could become a bridal trend.

Some, like journalist Rob Driscoll, questioned the relevance of Cheryl's presence -- 'So tell me. Why is Cheryl Cole having her pictures taken on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival? Again. #nothingtodowithfilmsatall' -- while others made fun of the costume's two-tone coloring with comparisons to the sort of femininie hygiene products that aren't part of the L'Oreal line.

London 2012: Shoppers guide to the Olympic city

Fashion fans heading to London during the upcoming Olympic Games will be spoiled for choice when it comes to indulging in their favorite pastime. Check out Relaxnews's guide to the best places to shop in the UK capital, from pop-up shops to luxury department stores.

Situated at the gateway to London's Olympic Park, it is estimated that 70 percent of spectators will pass through Westfield Stratford City, which opened in September 2011 and is Europe's largest urban shopping center with leading London stores such as LK Bennett and Jaeger as well as international labels including Prada and Tommy Hilfiger.

London department store Liberty, which was named number one of the 100 best shops in London by Time Out last year, will debut its first pop-up store at the mall, running  May 28-September 12. Situated in main promenade The Street, the shop will echo Liberty's prestigious flagship store on  Marlborough Street.

Shoppers looking to escape the bustle of the Olympic neighborhood should visit the more tranquil Westfield Shepherds Bush in the West of the city, which hosts high-end section The Village, with stores including Dior, Louis Vuitton and Jimmy Choo.

Or there is of course the famous Oxford Street in the center of town, which welcomes over 100 million shoppers from 200 countries every year and hosts flagships from high street retailers including American Apparel, Topshop, Urban Outfitters and H&M.

There, you will also find some of the city's best department stores, such as Selfridges. This will host the 'Wonder Windows' program during July and August -- showcasing the Britain Creates 2012 Exhibition, where leading designers such as Paul Smith and Matthew Williamson have each teamed up with a leading contemporary artist to create a work of art to represent London as a capital for creative excellence.

Shoppers in the pursuit of somewhere less mainstream should try the Boxpark pop-up mall in the Shoreditch neighborhood, which brings together independent streetwear labels including Abuze and Boxfresh. The mall will be showing free musical performances from some of London's best rising talents during the Olympic Games, and on August 1 will launch an exclusive exhibition to allow tourists to meet local London art critics and artists.

Meanwhile, ladies looking for a quirkier aesthetic should head to the eclectic markets in the East of the city such as Brick Lane and Spitalfields, whose array of quirky independent retailers regularly attract Brit style icons such as Alexa Chung and Florence Welch. Luxe stationery: Louis Vuitton to 'pump up' writing category

Despite its increasing innovations in the online arena, Louis Vuitton hasn't forgotten the art of letter writing, with reports that the French luxury house is planning to expand its stationery offerings with more 'paper goods and related paraphernalia.'

The expansion plans follow the house's announcement earlier this year that it will be venturing into the realm of perfume, and is said to tie in with the development of its boutique in Paris's Saint-Germain-des-Prés literary neighborhood -- famous for its past associations with writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

While there has not yet been an official announcement, sources told WWD this week that the leather goods label will be adding to its existing offerings which include pens, agendas and notebooks, with plans to 'pump up its writing category.'

Other luxury labels to have ventured into the realm of stationery include Tiffany & Co. and Mulberry, while last year Oscar de la Renta revealed its collaboration with US luxury stationery firm Mrs. John L. Strong. The ornate set includes place cards, notecards and invitations adorned in bows and other common Oscar de la Renta motifs.

Gap raises profit outlook, shares rise

(Reuters) - Gap Inc raised its yearly profit forecast, prompted by first-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street estimates and rising sales, and its shares rose 8 percent after hours.

For the full year, Gap estimated earnings of $1.78 to $1.83 a share, above the $1.75 to $1.80 it forecast in February.

'It's important to remain measured in our outlook given that our biggest selling seasons are still ahead of us,' said Chief Financial Officer Sabrina Simmons.

Given the first quarter beat, 'the current forecast does appear to be conservative,' said Betty Chen, an analyst with Wedbush Securities.

She said that while the company appeared to be on the right track, 'We're all waiting to see some sustainability.'

For the first quarter ended April 28, the owner of the Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic chains earned $233 million, or 47 cents a share, compared with $233 million, or 40 cents a share, a year ago.

Analysts, on average, had been expecting Gap to earn 46 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

After years of being accused of selling boring clothes, Gap has regained an edge in fashion, following a prolonged turnaround that included a change in top management.

The company's spring merchandise is selling well, and its website has been revamped.

Gap, the third biggest clothes retailer in the world after Zara owner Inditex , and H&M owner Hennes & Mauritz AB , had preannounced that sales rose 6 percent to $3.49 billion, while comparable store sales were up 4 percent.

During the quarter, sales at established North American stores rose 5 percent each for the Gap and Banana Republic brands. Sales at Old Navy stores rose 4 percent, the company said.

Gap shares rose to $28.50 after the bell. They closed down 2.9 percent at $26.31 on Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange.

Historic diamond sells for $9.7 mn

A centuries-old diamond passed down through generations of European royalty fetched nine million Swiss francs ($9.7 million) at auction in Geneva on Tuesday.

The 35-carat 'Beau Sancy' diamond was worn by Marie de Medici, Queen consort of Henry IV, at her coronation in 1610.

Five bidders spanning three continents competed for the historic jewel at a Sotheby's auction where there was little evidence of the current global financial woes.

An anonymous telephone bidder purchased the jewel, put on the market by the House of Prussia and described by Sotheby's as one of the 'most fascinating and romantic' gems ever to come to auction.

The buyer paid 9,042,500 Swiss francs ($9,699,618) including the buyer's premium for the pear-shaped, double rose cut diamond -- more than double the $2 million to $4 million estimate.

'You are buying an historic work of art -- you are not buying a diamond,' said Philipp Herzog von Wuerttenberg, chairman of Sotheby's Europe, following the sale.

'I fell in love with it when I saw it. It's the cut, it's the history,' he said.

The Beau Sancy attracted bids from North America, Europe and Asia, he said, refusing to give further details about the buyer.

The diamond's royal connections date back to 1604 when it was bought for Henri IV of France at the insistence of his wife Marie de Medici who wore it atop her crown at her coronation.

Later that century it was acquired by the Dutch and used to seal the wedding of Willem II of Orange Nassau to Mary Stuart, daughter of Charles I of England.

Stuart pawned the rose-cut gem to finance her brother Charles II's fight for the throne.

In 1702, the first king of Prussia gave it pride of place in the new royal crown and it has passed through generations of the House of Prussia until today.

'We've sold much larger diamonds but it has this wonderful romantic history, an unparalleled royal history -- it has never been in non-royal hands,' said David Bennett, co-chairman of Sotheby's Switzerland, ahead of the sale.

The Beau Sancy went under the hammer at Geneva's Beau Rivage hotel as part of Sotheby's 'Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels' sale.

A second historic diamond, a 7.3-carat 'fancy yellow' formerly belonging to Charles Edward Stuart, one-time pretender to the thrones of Great Britain and Ireland, sold to a telephone bidder for 902,500 francs ($968,085) including the buyers premium.

More commonly known as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', his attempts to make the Stuarts regain the crown failed and following the Battle of Culloden in 1745 he went into exile in France and Italy, where he is thought to have offered the gem to the Corsini family in gratitude for their support.

A pearl and diamond tiara created in 1920 by French jeweller Chaumet for the marriage of Prince Alexandre Murat to Yvonne Gillois meanwhile sold to a caller for 3.6 million francs ($3.8 million), well over its 1.4 million franc estimate.

The headpiece boasts one of the largest natural pearls ever recorded, according to Sotheby's.

On Monday a collection of 70 jewels belonging to billionaire philanthropist Lily Safra was sold by auctioneer Christie's in Geneva, raising $37.9 million for charity.

Brazil-born Safra, 77, was married to the Jewish-Lebanese banker Edmond Safra who died in a blaze at his Monte-Carlo penthouse in 1999.

The Elton John AIDS foundation, a water treatment programme in Brazil and children's hospital in Israel are among 32 charitable institutes to benefit from the sale of the gems, many of them created specially for Safra by renowned Paris jeweller JAR.

Dior and Chanel among designers set for Cannes fashion show

Alexander Wang, Balenciaga and Roberto Cavalli are just some of the big names contributing looks to a Carine Roitfeld-curated fashion show at the upcoming amfAR's Cinema Against AIDS gala during the Cannes Film Festival.

The annual fundraising event is always a highlight of the festival, and will for the first time feature a full-scale fashion show based around former French Vogue editor Roitfeld's concept of the perfect black wardrobe. Some 20 designers are contributing to the show, ranging from classic French labels Christian Dior and Chanel to rising talents such as Scotland's Christopher Kane.

WWD reports May 16 that the entire collection will be auctioned off as a single lot during the May 24 gala at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden Roc in Cap d'Antibes, where Roitfeld joins the likes of Milla Jovovich and Karl Lagerfeld as an event chair. Stars including Janet Jackson and Kylie Minogue will provide musical entertainment.

Other hotly anticipated events at this year's Cannes, which runs May 16-27, include the Women in Film event in collaboration with Calvin Klein on May 17 and the Trophée Chopard ceremony, also on May 17 which annually honors the talent of two rising actors.

London show celebrates 60 years of British glamour

LONDON (Reuters) - A decadent gown made from feathers and a printed lace latex dress designed by some of fashion's luminaries will go on display as part of a new exhibition to celebrate the glitz and glamour of Britain's ball gowns.

Ball gowns: British Glamour Since 1950, on at London's Victoria and Albert Museum from May 19 until January 2013, showcases a collection of 60 dresses marking the journey of formal attire from private events to the public parade.

'This exhibition is a very exciting moment for us, we really wanted to launch the new fashion gallery with a display that celebrated British fashion design,' co-curator Sonnet Stanfill said.

The show displays a vast array of specially made designs for social events like debutante balls, royal state occasions and red carpet events spanning 60 years.

Most people are excited by the idea of a fairytale evening, of choosing a gown that shows their level of taste that makes them look their best and presents them in their finest attire, Stanfill told Reuters.

'There is the moment that everyone hopes for when a woman goes to her wardrobe and chooses a gown, to have that moment where you feel like you're the belle of the ball.'

Visitors stepping into the softly lit halls, will be able to see some of the most beautiful and daring creations from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Erdem.

Projections of the gowns, shot by photographer David Hughes, are beamed on each alcove of the domed ceiling in crisp detail.

The lower gallery showcases historic gowns dating back to the 1950s, including a Norman Hartnell design for the late Queen Mother and Princess Diana's 'Elvis Dress' by Catherine Walker.

Choosing the designers and the dresses on the display was an extremely difficult task, Stanfill said.

'We really looked for things that showcased different couture techniques, different silhouettes and also of course, it had to be British, so by culling through our permanent collection, we chose the pieces that we felt were the grandest examples.'

White chandeliers and giant silvery pearl necklaces which the mannequins are perched upon make up the new mezzanine level, which was designed to represent a grand ballroom.

But the exhibition isn't all about parties and layers of tulle and froth, added Stanfill, who said she discovered a layer of subversion beneath Atsuko Kudo's design, which appears to be lace but is made from latex.

'One of the things I have really enjoyed working for on this show, is notion of subversion...It's more than just a dress, it's that one element of surprise that I have really enjoyed discovering,' Stanfill said.

'British design, you think you know what it's all about and then something comes along and upends your preconceived notions.'

Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz Celebrate Motherhood at the "What To Expect When You're Expecting" Premiere

One leading lady has twins, the other says 'I definitely should not have a baby,' and both led the celebration of pregnancy and motherhood at the 'What To Expect When You're Expecting' movie premiere at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Monday, May 14. And while stars Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz may be the main characters in the film based on the best-selling pregnancy advice book, along with Elizabeth Banks, Brooklyn Decker and Anna Kendrick, being together on the red carpet and at an earlier press conference to support the romantic comedy are the only times they have actually run into each other.

'None of us ever worked together!' Lopez admitted at the press conference with a laugh. But they were all smiles as the premiere stopped traffic on Hollywood Boulevard, as hordes of hollering fans watched breathlessly from across the street. Lopez and the others happily signed a few autographs, then greeted their male costars, including Rodrigo Santoro, Matthew Morrison, Ben Falcone, Joe Manganiello and Chace Crawford.

Each couple's story is told separately, which is why the women never worked on the flick at the same time. So the film follows Lopez and Santoro, Diaz and Morrison, Banks and Falcone, Kendrick and Crawford, and Decker and Dennis Quaid, who missed the shindig. Other cast members on hand included Wendi McLendon-Covey, Thomas Lennon, Whitney Port and Rebel Wilson, as well as director Kirk Jones and producer Mike Medavoy.

And perhaps the most appropriate star at the show was Melissa Joan Hart, whose baby bump is pretty obvious at this point. She's going to have her third child in a few months, so hopefully some of the birthing scenes in 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' didn't scare her too badly, as she's been down this road before. As for Diaz, it didn't take making the movie to scare her off from pregnancy. That happened to her about 15 years ago.

'I saw my sister give birth, a C-section, when I was 24,' the 39-year-old remembered with a shiver during the press conference. 'There was like blood everywhere. My sister?s guts out on a platter. It was crazy. No one should see that! It changed my life.'

Coco Rocks, Versailles Rolls in Latest Chanel Cruise

Coco Chanel never really dressed rock stars; yet rock and roll at its most insouciant and innocent was the cry of the latest cruise collection by the house she founded, a show staged amid much pageantry at the world's most most famous chateau.

Presented before spouting French Renaissance's fountains, this spring 2013 collection from Chanel, staged Monday, May 14, at Versailles, was a revolutionary statement, taking cruise far from the sandy beachfront to a sunset rock festival backstage cocktail.

Chanel's couturier Karl Lagerfeld fused fistfuls of musical movements from America and Britain in single looks. Chanel's little black jacket became punk rocker on tour in patent leather, supporting a hippie dandy summer Love-In broad brim straw hat, New Romantic multi-layered skirt in a Punk graffiti print, Heavy Metal wristbands and Rockabilly brothel creepers sneakers. Lagerfeld's halter mini dresses were of jacquard and his curvy cocktails of psychedelic silk.

Made in a palette of light lime, washed out purple and coral pink; embellished with belts, chokers, necklaces and brooches, this knowing rocker style looked all the better splashed by the fountains and seen under rapidly moving clouds and a white-blue sky.

'There is nothing more French than Versailles. So Chanel seems right here. It's the ultimate destination, so is Chanel,' quipped the designer, dressed in gingham tartan shirt and matching tie, green frock coat and fingerless gloves.

Never before has Chanel - the bell wether show in cruise, a season whose commercial importance has exploded in the past half decade - presented clothes quite so sophisticated and immaculately embroidered as this season.

It's easy to forget that Chanel was a real fashion revolutionary, who freed women from the cage of restricted 19th century corsets, whose first liberating step were easy-to-fit jerseys dresses. Yet this show's second look was a corset dress, the tough shape defined by armor made of fabric buds. This November, when the first outfits from this show will hit store shelves, Lagerfeld wants women to go out in curvy, nipped at the waist dresses.

Cruise, a collection that frequently stays in boutiques for seven months, longer than either spring or summer, now accounts for up to 30 percent of many houses' revenues, and its influence on trends is also immense. Particularly this show.

If the collection had any key material it was denim. Again, Chanel detested the fabric, the arrival of jeans and the birth of alternative culture.

'Coco Chanel was wrong about jeans, which was very rare. But she was a lady of a certain age, so I think we can forgive her that. No? She did get a great deal right,' said Lagerfeld.

Opening Ceremony launching fashion magazine for 'new generation'

Opening Ceremony is launching a fashion magazine this August, called OC Annual, with the specialty store aiming for it to become a 'collectible publication for a new generation.'

The on-trend store, which has locations in New York, Tokyo and Los Angeles, is feting its 10th anniversary this year, and founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim hope to follow in the footsteps of iconic fashion publications such as high street store Benetton's Colors magazine.

'As magazine fanatics, O.C. founder Humberto Leon and myself are aiming to create a collectible publication for a new generation, something beautiful and special in the vein of Benetton's 'Colors,' Comme des Garçons' 'Six' and Joe McKenna's 'Joe.',' wrote Lim in an internal memo obtained by WWD.

'We want to make a magazine that will appeal to kids in Nebraska as much as industry people.'

With major fashion photographers including Bruce Weber, Walter Pfeiffer, Todd Cole and Tim Barber already lined up, each issue of the collectible fashion and culture magazine will have a particular theme, with the debut edition to focus on sport in honor of the upcoming London Olympics.

The Olympics is also the theme of US Vogue's June issue, which features soccer star Hope Solo, tennis player Serena Williams and swimmer Ryan Lochte on the Annie Leibovitz-shot cover.

Moscow show recalls fashion behind the Iron Curtain

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A sweeping new Moscow fashion exhibit illustrates the evolution of Soviet couture behind the Iron Curtain from the post World War One era to Perestroika.

'Fashion behind the Iron Curtain' at the 16th-century Tsaritsyno estate on Moscow's outskirts spans seven decades of female coquetry, describing how Soviet women made do with silk night gowns for theatre, acquired designer items and scrounged for fabric to satisfy a hunger for style in spite of shortages.

The retrospective offers glimpses of the sophisticated, Western-inspired dress of the Communist-era elite.

Elegant crepe-de-Chine dresses, furs, evening gloves, hats and designer heels worn by famous ballerinas, actresses and other personalities draw an arc through history displaying over 1,000 looks from 1920s to 1990s.

Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev's daughter Galina shocked her peers with a risqué floral mini dress, while ballerina Galina Ulanova wore Italian designer Salvatore Ferragamo pumps, inaccessible to most at the height of the Cold War.

Visitors have flocked to the exhibit open through mid-June to see other looks, such as the sexy red strapless dress that earned Soviet actress Klara Luchko the nickname the 'Red Bomb' at the 1962 Cannes film festival.

Fashion is a rare window into history that speaks to the modern-day, style-conscious public, exhibit curator Irina Korotkikh said.

'The main purpose is to show to the young and those who lived under the USSR that fashion did exist,' she told Reuters.

'Soviet women were elegant in spite of the economic and political situation,' she said.

Faced with scarcity under the planned Soviet economy, Korotkikh said many women queued - sometimes overnight - for prized bits of fabric and patterns to sew their own dresses.

'I love the fashion of those years because there were no puffy down jackets, there were beautiful dresses,' said museum visitor Yelena Yeliseyeva, 60, a retired aeronautical engineer.

'Fashion existed in the Soviet Union and it was very beautiful,' she said.

Relatively new to local museums, fashion exhibits have rapidly become popular with the public. Visitors came in record numbers to see Christian Dior dresses at the Pushkin museum and designs by revolutionary French couturier Paul Poiret at the Kremlin Museums last year.

Monthly style indicator: Round shades and fedoras dominate most popular accessories

Fashionistas have been on a quest for the ultimate in festival chic, with round sunglasses by labels including The Row and Dries Van Noten among the most viewed items on online style sharing community Polyvore during the past month.

The site's latest Intelligence Report cites circular shades as the month's biggest accessories trend, with the style popularized by celebrities including Lauren Conrad and Dita Von Teese at last month's Coachella music festival in California running ahead of other shapes. Other fans of round frames include Lady Gaga, Beyoncé Knowles and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The latter's own label The Row has earned 21,662 views on the site for its round frames, while other popular brands include Angelina Jolie's favorite Barton Perreira, Selima Sun® for J.Crew sunglasses and Thierry Lasry's patterned styles. But it was a pair of dark grey marble printed shades by Dries Van Noten x Linda Farrow that clocked up the most views -- 94,750.

Other festival accessory staples dominating Polyvore include straw hats, with a Biltmore® straw fedora earning 324,684 views on the site. Such styles were all over last month's Coachella music festival in California, with the likes of Emma Roberts and Vanessa Hudgens favoring the look.

Meanwhile, the wedge sneaker trend is still refusing to budge, with Isabel Marant's high tops still number one in a compilation of top incoming searches to the site.
