(Reuters) - British royals Kate Middleton and Prince Harry led Vanity Fair's international best-dressed list on Tuesday, following a year in which all eyes have been on Britain's young members of the monarchy.
The newlywed Duchess of Cambridge, 30, whose husband is Harry's brother Prince William, will grace the September cover of the magazine's newsstand editions after a year of setting style trends and wowing fashionistas with her mix of designer and high street wardrobe choices in her first year of official duties.
The magazine said Prince Charles spent an estimated $55,000 on designer clothes for his new daughter-in-law but that Middleton declined the services of a royal dresser. Instead, she selected her own wardrobe from designers such as Alice Temperley and Alexander McQueen, as well as stores like Topshop and T.K. Maxx.
With Prince William off the list, fashion watchers wondered if his father should offer to hire him a stylist.
Prince Harry, 27, led the best-dressed men followed by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who is married to model Gisele Bundchen. Both the prince and the sports star made their first appearances on the style list.
The Vanity Fair best-dressed rundown is voted for by more than 2,000 fashion industry professionals, journalists and taste-makers as well as the best-dressed Hall of Fame members.
Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain, who will grace the September cover for subscribers' editions, became a red carpet staple during this year's awards season and made her debut on the best-dressed list for bold fashion choices, including her Alexander McQueen dress at this year's Oscars ceremony.
She was joined by fellow actresses Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing, Lea Seydoux, model Elettra Wiedemann and musician Alicia Keys.
Rapper Jay-Z joined Prince Harry and Brady for his first appearance in the style rundown, beating wife Beyonce, who failed to make the top 10. 'Today' show co-host Matt Lauer and '60 Minutes' correspondent Morley Safer also made it.
The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry were not the only royal to be included. The women's list acknowledged best-dressed veterans Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser of Qatar and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, as well as first-timer Gucci model Charlotte Casiraghi, who is fourth in line to the Monaco throne.
British actor Colin Firth and wife Livia made the best-dressed couples list, and New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, 81, was named a 'fashion original.'

Diane von Furstenberg has announced she's joining forces with surf and snow lifestyle brand Roxy for a limited edition swimwear line called DVF loves ROXY.
Set to launch globally for Spring/Summer 2013, the range will blend Furstenberg's iconic bold prints with Roxy's signature surf culture-inspired silhouettes.
Comprising 35 pieces, the line will include swimwear, beach cover-ups, board shorts, rash guards, and beach bags.
'I am so excited to work with Roxy,' Furstenberg told WWD of the partnership. 'The collection is playful and fun...we wanted to empower women to go for it and ride the wave.'

Top milliners give London landmarks a makeover
Leading British milliners Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy have curated a selection of bespoke headwear for some of London's most iconic statues as part of the London 2012 Festival -- a series of cultural events running alongside the Olympics.
Dubbed Hatwalk, the initiative is a collaboration between the Mayor of London, fashion publication Grazia, BT, and the British Fashion Council, and brings together 21 emerging and established designers to showcase the best of British millinery.
Trafalgar Square's most famous resident Admiral Lord Nelson has got a new hat for the first time in 200 years, with the oldest hatters in London, Lock & Co -- famed for making Nelson's original bicorn hat -- creating an updated version which even comprises an Olympic torch.
Other highlights include a headpiece for British General Sir Henry Havelock by Treacy, who is best known for his catwalk collaborations with Alexander McQueen and design for Princess Beatrice at last year's royal wedding. Meanwhile Jones, who has worked with international fashion houses including Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier, has restyled King George IV with a golden-domed design.

Russia's 'Pussy Riot' on trial for cathedral protest
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Three women who protested against Vladimir Putin in a "punk prayer" on the altar of Russia's main cathedral went on trial on Monday in a case seen as a test of the longtime leader's treatment of dissent during a new presidential term.
The women from the band 'Pussy Riot' face up to seven years in prison for an unsanctioned performance in February in which they entered Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral, ascended the altar and called on the Virgin Mary to "throw Putin out!"
Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, were brought to Moscow's Khamovniki court for Russia's highest-profile trial since former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky was convicted in 2010, for a second time, in the same courtroom where the Pussy Riot trial began.
Supporters chanted "Girls, we're with you!" and "Victory!" as the women, each handcuffed by the wrist to a female officer, were led from a white and blue police van into the courthouse through a side entrance. Streets around the court, on a high Moscow River embankment, were closed.
They were led into a metal and clear-plastic courtroom cage, where they milled and spoke with lawyers as preparations began. Tolokonnikova, in a blue chequered shirt, lowered her head to speak through a small opening in the enclosure. Two pairs of handcuffs hung at the ready just beside her face.
"We did not want to offend anybody," Tolokonnikova said, speaking to a defence lawyer who stood outside the enclosure. "We admit our political guilt, but not legal guilt."
The stunt was designed to highlight the close relationship between the dominant Russian Orthodox Church and former KGB officer Putin, then prime minister, whose campaign to return to the presidency in a March election was backed clearly, if informally, by the leader of the church, Patriarch Kirill.
The protest offended many believers and enraged Kirill. The church, which has enjoyed a big revival since the demise of the officially atheist Communist Soviet Union in 1991 and is seeking more influence on secular life, cast the performance as part of a sinister campaign by "anti-Russian forces".
ANGER OVER CLOSE CHURCH-STATE TIES
The women are charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility.
But in opening statements read by a defence lawyer, who sometimes struggled with the handwritten texts, they said they were protesting against Kirill's political support for Putin and had no animosity toward the church or the faithful.
"I have never had such feelings toward anyone in the world," Tolokonnikova said in her statement. "We are not enemies of Christians ... our motives are exclusively political."
"We only want Russia to change for the better," she said.
Alyokhina's statement said: "I thought the church loved all its children, but it seems the church loves only those children who love Putin."
The women looked thinner and paler than they did when they were jailed following the performance in late February, shortly before Putin, in power as president from 2000-2008 and then as prime minister, won a six-year presidential term on March 4.
"She looks like she has been on a long hunger strike," Stanislav Samutsevich said of his daughter. "Her cheeks are hollow ? I've never seen her in such a state. I think this is like an inquisition, like mockery."
A reporter on state-run Rossiya-24 television presented a different picture, focusing on occasional smiles and chuckles and an overall air of self-assuredness among the women, who whispered to each other as a prosecutor read the charges.
"Look at their faces; they are laughing and joking," the reporter said on the news, adding that a viewer might think they were "continuing the action" they carried out at the cathedral.
Prosecutors asked for the trial, which was streamed live on the Internet, to be closed to the public and the media, saying a "rift in society" and emotions over the case put the defendants and other participants at risk.
A group of conservative Russian writers called on Monday for tough punishment. But Kremlin opponents, rights activists and supporters of the defendants say the charges are politically motivated.
"This has nothing to do with the law, it is a political reprisal," said opposition lawmaker Gennady Gudkov. "(The prosecution of) Pussy Riot is of course an unprecedented case of stupidity and brutality on the part of the authorities."
PROTEST MOVEMENT
The performance, a protest against the church's support for Putin, was part of a lively protest movement that at its peak saw 100,000 people turn out for rallies in Moscow, some of the largest in Russia since the Soviet Union's demise.
The plight of the three women, who have been held in a courtroom cage during pre-trial hearings, has also drawn attention in the West, where governments are closely watching how Putin will handle dissent.
Rights groups and musicians such as Sting and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have expressed concern about the trial, reflecting doubts that Putin - who could serve until 2024 if re-elected in six years - will become more tolerant.
In her opening statement, read out by defence lawyer Violetta Volkova, Samutsevich said she saw the prosecution as "the start of a campaign of authoritarian, repressive measures aimed to ... spread fear among politically active citizens."
The trial comes as Putin, 59, is trying to forestall potential challenges and rein in his opponents, who hope to reignite the street protest movement this autumn.
On Monday, Putin signed a law enacting stricter punishment for defamation. That follows recent laws tightening controls on foreign-funded civil rights groups and sharply raising fines for violations of public order at street rallies.
Opposition leaders including anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny and socialite Ksenia Sobchak have had their homes searched and faced repeated rounds of questioning over violence at a protest on the eve of Putin's inauguration on May 7.
Navalny was due to appear before investigators in a separate case on Monday, and lawyers, who said they were told he would be charged with a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.
Amnesty International has called for the release of the Pussy Riot members, two of whom have young children, saying the charges are not a "justifiable response to the peaceful - if, to many, offensive - expression of their political beliefs."
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev dismissed criticism of the case in remarks published on Monday, saying the trial was a "serious ordeal" for the defendants and their families but that "one should be calm about it" and await the outcome.
"It seems to me that there will always be different perceptions about what is acceptable and not acceptable from a moral point of view and where moral misbehaviour becomes a criminal action," he told the Times of London in an interview.
"Whether that is the case here is up to the court to decide," he said, according to a Russian government transcript.
Few Russians believe the country's courts are independent, however, and Medvedev acknowledged during his 2008-2012 presidential term that they were subject to political influence and corruption.
"The court's decision will depend not on the law but on what the Kremlin wants," said Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a Soviet-era dissident and veteran human rights activist who heads the Moscow Helsinki Group.

London Fashion Week: Jonathan Saunders creates bespoke visuals
This year's BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund winner Jonathan Saunders has collaborated with London Fashion Week to create his own bespoke visuals to promote the event, marking the launch of a new annual designer team-up.
The British Fashion Council (BFC) announced last week that Saunders has created the visual event branding and marketing materials for the Spring/Summer 2013 edition of London Fashion Week.
Based on an adapted version of his ombre print from Fall/Winter 2012, the pattern is inspired from Hungarian French artist Victor Vasarely, whose art and sculpture focused around the areas of optical illusion and geometric abstract art.
Saunders was approached by the BFC after he scooped this year's BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, which is inspired by the US Vogue Fashion Fund and offers an up-and-coming British-based creator a cash prize and mentoring with aims to help them become a global brand.
For the future it is hoped that the annual visuals for London Fashion Week will be created by that year's Fund recipient.
'It's a fantastic opportunity and a real first for us to work with one of our designers in this capacity. Jonathan Saunders' work is very visually striking and the use of bold prints and colors are his trademark. It is extremely exciting to be able to breathe new life into the creative of London Fashion Week,' said BFC chief executive Caroline Rush.

Azealia Banks stars in Alexander Wang T video
Her track '212' was the unofficial soundtrack to last season's fashion week shows, and hip-hop star Azealia Banks' domination of the fashion world is showing no sign of slowing down as she's now the face of Alexander Wang's T line.
The rapper is the latest in a string of musicians to front a campaign for the designer's diffusion line, following in the footsteps of Santigold, Spank Rock and Die Antwoord.
This isn't the first time Wang and Banks have teamed up either -- the star was Wang's date for the 2012 Met Gala, and she provided music for his Spring 2012 ready-to-wear campaign with Liya Kibede.
Daniel Jackson directed Banks in the T Fall 2012 video, where she raps 'Van Vogue' from her recent EP '1991'.
'She exudes a certain rawness that makes her a very unique talent,' Wang told style.com.

eBay adding to fashion credentials with London initiative
Following hot on the heels of its recently announced eBay Holiday Collective designer teamup, the online auction site has been confirmed as the new sponsor of the British Fashion Council's Fashion Forward initiative.
The initiative, which helps designers develop and show their collections in London, is now in its sixth year and supports some of the British fashion capital's biggest names including Mary Katrantzou, Henry Holland and James Long.
The BFC announced July 25 that eBay will sponsor the initiative in a 'multi-season' agreement from the launch of the Spring 2013 collections.

Ashish Gupta unveils sporty Topshop line for 'ones that don't get the medals'
For athletically challenged ladies who find it hard to relate to Olympic champions, designer Ashish Gupta has launched a fun sports-themed clothing line with Topshop incorporating slogans such as '2nd place' and 'Loser.'
Available at select Topshop stores and on topshop.com, the collection is Gupta's eighth capsule line for the high street retailer.
Highlights include a gray jersey sweat set embellished with world flags, jumpers and vests typical of Gupta's comic design approach, sporting phases such as 'Don't play games' and a baseball jacket embossed with 'Loser' on the back.

Austrian find dates bras back to 15th century
VIENNA (Reuters) - Four mediaeval bras have been found in a collection of textiles excavated from an Austrian castle, confounding conventional wisdom that bras did not exist before the 19th century.
The linen garments were found in the remains of Lengberg Castle in eastern Tyrol. They resemble modern bras in that they have two distinct cups, and have decorative needle lace that would not have been visible when worn under a dress.
The bras were among 2,700 textile fragments found during archaeological investigations of the castle by a team from the University of Innsbruck, which began in 2008.
Carbon dating has now confirmed that the garments date back to the 15th century, the researchers said.
Varying accounts exist of who invented the modern bra, but Sigmund Lindauer, who came from a German family of corset makers, patented an elastic version in 1913 and began mass producing the garments.
The metal shortages of World War Two helped hasten the demise of the corset.

International Woolmark Prize: Pankaj & Nidhi take final regional spot
The final regional winner for the International Woolmark Prize has been revealed, with designer duo Pankaj & Nidhi set to represent India in the international contest.
Established back in the 1950s by Australian wool industry giant The Woolmark Company to celebrate the use of merino wool by emerging designers, the prize was re-launched this year.
Design icons including Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld are among previous recipients of the Woolmark Prize, which sees industry figureheads from areas including Europe, the USA and China each selecting a regional winner.

Louis Vuitton readies for Shanghai opening
Louis Vuitton is certainly no shrinking violet when it comes to self-promotion and the brand made its intentions in China well and truly clear Thursday, taking out the whole front page of a national newspaper to promote the opening of its new store in Shanghai this Saturday.
With one whole floor that will be open 'invite-only,' a gilded spiral staircase and specially designed offerings for the Chinese market -- such as made-to-order cases for tea sets and mahjong tile carrying cases -- the outlet in the fashionable Plaza 66 mall is designed to further cement the Louis Vuitton brand in a market now worth an estimated 160 billion yuan (20.4 billion euros) per year, third most in the world behind the United States and Japan.
The Shanghai store that featured on the front page of the China Daily newspaper will be the brand's largest in China, spread across four floors and seeing visitors attended to by more than 100 staff members. There's even a hairdressing salon on the private floor.

Captured by photographer Steven Meisel, cast members of the campaign include 81-year-old dancer Jacquie 'Tajah' Murdock, who found fame when she featured on Ari Seth Cohen's Advanced Style blog -- which showcases older fashionistas seen around the streets of New York.
'This campaign is a dream come true. I grew up in Harlem always wanting to be a model, but in my day there were very little opportunities for women of color to work in fashion.
'At 18 I went from agent to agent looking for jobs, even as a hand model. I have finally made it and I will never give up. Hopefully someday I will get to Paris!' Cohen quoted Murdock as saying on his blog.

Pregnant Adriana Lima bares bump for Pirelli
Behind-the-scenes images have shown Adriana Lima modeling with her baby bump in the Pirelli Calendar 2013 -- marking the first time a model so visibly expecting has posed for the iconic publication.
Lima announced she was expecting her second child with basketball player husband Marko Jaric back in March, and behind-the-scenes photographs from the shoot featured on Italian Vanity Fair's website show the model posing with her baby bump visibly bared in front of the lens.
The 2013 edition of the annual trade calendar, which dates back to 1964 and has featured some of the world's most beautiful women including Kate Moss, Eva Herzigova and Cindy Crawford, was shot in Brazil in May by acclaimed photojournalist Steve McCurry.

British supermodels set to perform at London Olympics
Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss are among some of the fashion industry's big names reportedly set to take to the stage for the London Olympics closing ceremony.
While the show's organizers are keen to keep the plans under tight wraps, leaked documents reported in the British press July 15 that supermodel Moss will lead a tribute to British fashion.
The 38-year-old south London native will reportedly make her way along a huge catwalk alongside fellow supers Naomi Campbell, Stella Tennant, Lily Cole and Georgia May Jagger for the August 12 extravaganza.
Famed British couturiers including Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton and Stella McCartney -- who designed the Team GB kits -- are set to dress the models, who will allegedly take to the runway to David Bowie's classic hits 'Fashion' and 'Rebel Rebel.'
While the spectacle isn't guaranteed -- a London 2012 spokesperson stressed the list of performers could change and told The Daily Mail 'we won't comment' -- the news certainly gives fashionistas a reason to tune in.

Rihanna announces high street fashion line
She has already teamed up with Italian luxury label Armani for a limited edition line of clothing and lingerie, and now Rihanna is set to conquer the high street by teaming up with UK store River Island.
While details are currently scarce, the songstress announced July 16 that her capsule collection will launch at the high street retailer for Spring 2013.
'I've been wanting to design my own collection for some time. River Island is the perfect partner for me to collaborate with and working with a British, family run business also really appealed to me,' said the singer in a release.
'I find London really inspiring and River Island loves to have fun with clothes. I'm looking forward to working with them and creating something really special.'

Made-in-China U.S. Olympic uniforms spark political row
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Ralph Lauren's stylish uniforms for the U.S. Olympic team, complete with a jaunty beret, have sparked a political row because the red, white and blue outfits were made in China.
With U.S. unemployment hovering just above 8 percent, politicians have spoken out against the uniforms for the London Games that start later this month, and six Democratic senators said they plan to introduce legislation requiring the ceremonial uniforms be produced in the United States.
'At a time when too many Americans are looking for work and our manufacturers are closing factories, we need to do everything we can to keep jobs in America and not give the work of producing our iconic American uniforms for our Olympians to China,' Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey said in a statement announcing the plan.
The senators said they will introduce the 'Team USA Made In America Act of 2012' next week.
'I call on the USOC to do the right thing for this summer's team, and I call on my colleagues to help pass this bill to ensure we don't find ourselves in this appalling, embarrassing situation before the opening of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics,' Menendez said.
The proposal from Menendez and Frank R. Lautenberg, of New Jersey, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Sherrod Brown of Ohio would amend the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, which specifies requirements and rules for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and its members.
A spokeswoman for Menendez said it would be limited to ceremonial uniforms because some athletes may require specific high-performance items for their sport uniforms that simply aren't produced in the United States.
The move follows criticism about the uniforms from both political parties on Thursday.
Rep. Steve Israel, a Democrat from New York, said the issue was not just about a label, but an economic solution.
'Today there are 600,000 vacant manufacturing jobs in this country and the Olympic committee is outsourcing the manufacturing of uniforms to China? That is not just outrageous, it's just plain dumb. It is self-defeating,' he said.
House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, echoed that criticism.
'You'd think they'd know better,' Boehner told reporters.
The U.S. Olympic Committee defended its decision to have Lauren design the outfits and oversee the manufacturing process.
'Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded and we're grateful for the support of our sponsors,' spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement.
'We're proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company, and excited to watch America's finest athletes compete at the upcoming Games in London.'

Israel hosts Yamamoto's avant-garde designs
The geometric structures and angular light in Israel's ultra-modern Design Museum Holon offer a made-to-measure setting for a new retrospective by avant-garde fashion maestro Yohji Yamamoto.
More than 80 of the designer's creations spanning three decades went on show this week, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Japan.
It also marks the 40th anniversary of the company started by Yamamoto, now 69, who began his career in Japan in the 1970s and rose to international fame a decade later with his elegant cut, sober colours and fascination with fabrics.
The show in Holon is the latest in a series of retrospectives held since 2005 in Florence, Paris, Antwerp and London.
'But it's never the same exhibition. We adapt it to the people and the places,' said Coralie Gauthier, a spokeswoman for Yamamoto's fashion house.
'We're not just bringing our show to Israel, we are doing a show for Israelis, for the museum,' she told AFP.
Opened in 2010, Design Museum Holon, like Yamamoto's creations, challenges tradition. Conceived by Ron Arad, Israel's best-known contemporary architect, its striking exterior is made of massive orange and mauve steel ribbons that curve around the building.
'We found in this museum that there was something balanced between the place and the clothes that we didn't experience in other cities. It is the first time that it is so harmonious,' said Shohei Otsuka, president of Yohji Yamamoto Inc.
For curator Galit Gaon, Yamamoto and Arad share a 'great respect for the individual, who is always at the centre of their creation.'
The exhibition, which runs through October, shows both mens' and womenswear. The garments are displayed on headless figurines, suspended as if floating above ground and set off by sunlight that cuts into the galleries in geometric shapes or a crimson glow through coloured panes.
The women's pieces are surprisingly colourful while the menswear is more in line with the designer's signature style -- dark shades, elegant cut, discreet detailing.
In true Yamamoto style, the clothes drape the body, never constrict it -- like the museum, curator Gaon says, which 'is on a human scale.'
'It does not make one feel small, crushed, as in so many museums.'

Report: women change clothes four times a day on vacation
A UK study has revealed the average woman wears 28 different outfits during a weeklong holiday, with one in 20 admitting they often change attire several times a day just to get through all the garments in their suitcase.
The survey of 2,000 women, commissioned by clothing line F&F at British high street store Tesco, also revealed women will then buy another two items of clothing or shoes to add to their wardrobe while on vacation.
And the constant outfit changing can sometimes cause friction when remarked by a partner or travelling companion -- one in ten ladies even admitted their outfit changes had caused rows while they were away.
According to the study, the average suitcase for a holiday abroad will contain four dresses, six tops and four pairs of shorts or skirts. Two pairs of trousers or jeans also go in the suitcase, as do three bikinis or swimsuits, three pairs of flip-flops or sandals and two other pairs of shoes.
Speaking to Britain's The Daily Mail July 9, Bernadette Lusher from F&F explained the importance of a capsule holiday wardrobe to avoid over packing.
'Unlike the typical day at home, which can involve an outfit for work or for popping to the shops, an average day on holiday can consist of several different activities.

And the constant outfit changing can sometimes cause friction when remarked by a partner or travelling companion -- one in ten ladies even admitted their outfit changes had caused rows while they were away.
According to the study, the average suitcase for a holiday abroad will contain four dresses, six tops and four pairs of shorts or skirts. Two pairs of trousers or jeans also go in the suitcase, as do three bikinis or swimsuits, three pairs of flip-flops or sandals and two other pairs of shoes.
Speaking to Britain's The Daily Mail July 9, Bernadette Lusher from F&F explained the importance of a capsule holiday wardrobe to avoid over packing.

Nicole Richie has launched a new guest editor series on fashion website Polyvore, which will see an array of style icons offering advice, inspiration and their personal clothing and accessories picks.
The social-commerce website allows users to assemble sets of clothing from its database of items, with reality star turned designer Richie kicking off the new series by revealing the contents of her Balenciaga handbag for the 'What's In Her Bag?' set.
Contents featured in the fashionista's bag include beauty essentials such as lip balm and bobby pins, as well as items by luxury labels including Goyard and multiple choices of sunglasses.

Fetish fashion takes over the Berlin underground
BERLIN (Reuters) - Riders of the Berlin subway have been taking trips this week that go far beyond the hip German capital's already outlandish standards, as models in latex wear, fetish gear and 'spirit hoods' staged a fashion show on a train.
Girls wearing all-leather sado-masochist bodysuits tottered through the train car, followed by male models wearing nothing but ornamental metallic sculptures around their groin. Models in neon tulle dangled from the subway poles.
Around 600 people showed up for 'Underground Catwalk', a ticketed show during Berlin Fashion Week that took place entirely on a train running underneath the city.
'Because of the special location, models pretty much walk across people's laps. There's loud music blasting, it's pretty wild and colorful,' event director Alexander van Hessen told Reuters.
Micaela Schaefer, a German reality TV star known for her self-professed 'fabric allergy' and near-nude appearances, made tabloid headlines by performing in the show as a burlesque Marilyn Monroe in a costume made entirely of artificial blonde hair.
But 'Underground Catwalk' is also a forum for young Berlin designers to show more classic couture fare without paying the price for a fashion tent show, said van Hessen.
Berlin's fashion week, which ends this the weekend, is no showcase for haute couture on the scale of Paris or Milan.
Though a strong host of young local designers have significantly raised Berlin's fashion profile in recent years, the culture of the fashion week remains alternative and less focused on exclusive designer goods.
'We are the alternative to Berlin Fashion Week,' said von Hessen. 'You wouldn't drink champagne here, but beer or whisky.'
